Varley Wins
Hamper Race |
Christian Varley won
todays Christmas Hamper Handy cap race.
The
race which was held around 10 laps of a short
Ballaugh circuit saw approx. 30 - 40 riders take to
start line on a dry but windy winters morning.
There was action from the word go with a small
group of 3 consisting of eventual winner Christian
Varley, An Post rider Mark Christian and British
Academy Rider Joe Kelly, breaking away early on. The
trio worked well together to pull away from the
remaining chasseing bunch.
Varley went for
glory with a lap to go leaving Kelly and Christian
with the ground to make up. The now chasseing duo
couldn't bridge the gap before the line leaving
Varley to take the victory, and with a sprint for
the remaining podium placing's, Mark took second
with Joe coming in 3rd. |

Tour of the Middle |
Daren Bell wins the Tour of the Middle.
Yesterday saw the 5th round of the Black Grace
Cowley sponsored road race series. In cool damp
conditions 21 riders took to the start line on the
Tosaby Road in each the A and the B Race. The race
consisted of 10 laps for the A and 7 laps for the B
around the tough Stugadoo Course.
It wasn't
long until the first break of the day in the A race
as an 8 man group broke clear from the main bunch
within the first lap. Darren Bell, Aaron Livsey,
Jake Kelly, Jonathan Cregeen, Graeme Hatcher, Chris
Nicholson, Tom Mazzone and Chris Whorral formed the
break.
Darren Bell decided to chance it alone
on the second lap leaving his companions too
steadily increase his lead every lap and win the
race by 3.28 minutes.
Chris Whorral lead the
way for the remaining bunch with Jake Kelly
completing the podium.
The B race also
saw plenty of action with Gary Johnston making a
solo attempt on the first lap too be later joined by
a 3 man chase group. The quartet stayed away for the
remainder of the race.
Matty Bostock just
edged out Garry to take the win on the line.
Manx Viking Wheelers Laura Wasley was the winner of

SAM D’ARCY - RIP |
|
TRIBUTE TO SAM D'ARCY By Mick Considine
Jun 25, 2012,
The South East
Road Club would like to extend its’ sincerest
sympathies to the family of Sam D’Arcy, who
passed away this morning in the Hospice, at
Gorey District Hospital. Sam was the motivating
force behind a very popular annual cycle, which
was a major fundraiser for the Hospice. Indeed,
the irony of being a fundraiser and spending his
final days in the Hospice was not lost on Sam.
His motivation to stage the annual cycle was due
to the passing away of his late wife, Betty, in
March 2005 in Gorey District Hospital. As a
tribute to Betty,Sam at seventy years of age
took part in some of the inter-club races that
year. He visited her Grave every day.
It
goes without saying that Sam had a way of
getting things done.
There always was a
serendipitous moment when Sam, with his large
network of contacts would make the impossible,
possible. When the South East Road Club
organised the first Youth Two Day, he managed to
get sponsorship by “boarding” an Arklow Waste
Disposal Lorry as it was doing its’ rounds in
Arklow. The end result was very generous
sponsorship for the event. Sponsorship of the
Gorey Three Day came about in not too similar a
fashion, when Sam assisted the CEO of “An Post”,
when his bike had broken down on the Gorey Road.
That was Sam’s “modus operandi”.
Sam
organised a very popular disco in Gorey to
fundraise for the Irish Road Club. It was held
in Hunt’s Hall in Gorey every Saturday night in
the late sixties and early seventies. The DJ
was, of course, an IRC member, Terry Curran.
Sam joined the Irish Road Club in 1958 and
held many positions in that club. Such was the
respect for him that he was elected President of
the Irish Road Club in its’ Centenary year in
1990. The Irish Road Club is Ireland’s oldest
existing club. Sam subsequently was made an
honorary member for his services to cycling.
Sam was unique in that he never drifted away
from cycling, as so many of us did, only to
return later and attempt to make up for the
missing years. Sam was steadfast in his passion
and enthusiasm for cycling through the good and
bad years and certainly, cycling for a time was
neither popular nor profitable.
Sam’s
greatest achievement was the establishment of
the Gorey Three Day race. This came about due to
Sam’s connections with Gorey. His late mother
from a well-known Gorey family, the Walkers.
Betty was a daughter of Markie Kealy from
Clonattin, Gorey. The Gorey Three Day is now the
second longest running stage race in Ireland and
will approach its’ fiftieth anniversary in a few
years without its’ inspirational figure, who
will be sadly missed. No one can forget the
sight of Sam on his motorbike stewarding the
race. This always gave rise to many scary
moments particularly as Sam’s brain was wired to
the Continental side of the road as he blightly
disregarded white lines, whether broken or
straight.
The Gorey Three day is one
of the few races where there is a scramble for
entries. All of the great Irish cyclists, such as
Sean Kelly, Stephen Roche, Martin Earley and Paul
Kimmage have participated in it. It has been a huge
boost to the Gorey of Gorey and hinterlands during
the Easter period. That’s all thanks to the
foresight of one man. Sam was honoured by Gorey Town
Commissioners for his work with the race and at a
special ceremony he signed the Distinguished
Visitors book.
It was Sam’s ambition both to
live in Gorey and to start a bike shop there. This
was achieved when he built his house in Kilmurray in
the nineties and when opened his bike shop last
year. Sadly, the long retirement that he had hoped
to enjoy with Betty didn’t come about, but they did
enjoy a few short happy years together in their
beloved house.
Sam was a terrific help when
Arklow Cycling Club was set up 1985. He gave a great
deal of time to the club and helped out with
equipment. He gave a talk on bicycle maintenance,
attended and competed in our races. He gave plenty
of advice and without him Arklow Cycling Club would
not have been as successful as it was. When the
opportune time came to establish another club in the
area, Sam came on board and was a founder member of
the South East Road Club in July 2003. The “Road
Club” part of the South East Road Club name comes
from the connections to the Irish Road club, through
Sam and other founding members.
Sam was
responsible for setting up the very successful
inter-club league which is still running. He was
particularly interested in under age racing and was
the motivating force behind the first SERC two day
under age races. This ultimately led to the staging
of the All-Ireland under -age championships in 2009.
Despite the fact that Sam was involved with the
Slipstream club from 2008 onwards, he rang the
writer to wish us well with the All Ireland's. That
was typical of Sam. He could see that the staging of
major event in an area was inestimably superior to
minor matters in the past.
Sam’s heart was in
cycling. There are very few in any sport who have
given so much time, commitment, effort and
enthusiasm, without adequate reward. Sam didn’t get
the recognition that he deserved. He wasn’t afraid
to have a go at ‘City Hall’, while may others would
have have done the opposite and were rewarded for
it. Sam didn’t.
Sam has something in common
with Bono. Everyone has a Bono story, similarly
everyone has a Sam story.
He was a rare
individual, unique, individualistic, irascible, fun
and determined, but a very decent charitable side
that often was forgotten about. When my mother died
he sent me a marvelous letter of sympathy.
Ní
beidh a leithid ann arís. (We won’t meet his like
again)

Giro Jurby & Bikstyle
(Email
from Steve) |
|
A big thankyou to those who have entered the Giro
Jurby. We have 50 + entries so it should be a good
event.
Please find attached the Race Manual for the
event.
There is a strong Team line up with all the usual
IOM Clubs represented with additional 'trade teams'
Costa Boys, Team Posse, LEJOGers and the Bikestyle
Bandits.
I've tried to make sure that everyone has a
chance to get among the prizes. This means that you
all have to race and think about those who are in
your group as they may actually be your 'arch rival'
in this event. You will have to race flat out as the
object is to gain or save as much time as possible.
Prizes have been generously sponsored by
Bikestyle and Watts Up Coaching. Thanks to Bikestyle
and Andy Roche …..much appreciated guys….making
cycling happen.
BIKESTLE SERIES EVENT 5 is incorporated within
the structure of this event. Can I ask for those
that have not entered the Giro but ARE riding on
Sunday to let me know please. Just so I have an idea
of number of competitors on the road.
The weather is not looking too good I'm afraid
however I intend to run the event unless conditions
are dangerous.
Any questions give me a shout.
FINALLY I do need some more marshals for this
event. If you can spare some time on Friday eve or
Sunday morning (late start so you can ride up to the
event) please let me know.
See you all at the weekend.
Cheers and thanks again for entering!

Following the
success of the recent "Basic Bike Maintenance

another, this time targeting the more advanced

more knowledge and understanding of.
The course will be held in Bikestyle starting at
6pm. The numbers are limited. Please contact
Helen Wolstencroft to advise if you are
interested in attending. Phone/text:

We are planning on holding more of these Bike
Maintenance Evenings. If you are unable to
attend on 11th June and are interested in a
future event, pls advise Helen. In addition, if
there are any other related topics that you
would like to have demonstrated and discussed
with Richard, pls let Helen know. There may be
other club members who would benefit.
We are also aware that there are younger
"future" members who would benefit from a
Maintenance Course. We will be looking to
arrange a suitable evening, later in the summer.

Kennaugh Wins Tour of the West |
Rapha Condor Sharp Rider Tim Kennaugh won the
Tour of the West in fine form.
The third
round of the Black Grace Cowley Sponsored Road Race
series was held over 5 laps of the hard going peel
circuit which includes the Creg Willies climb.
The A race Rolled away from Ballig Bridge at
9am, to see plenty of early attempts of a break
away, eventual winner Tim Kennaugh and Graeme
Hatcher where the first riders to break free from
the main peloton on the peel coast road on the first
lap.
Graeme and Tim worked well together to
get a good gap which was help by the lack of
interest of the main bunch. A few attacks from the
group kept the breakaway down to about a minute for
a substantial amount of the race. The gap later rose
to about 1:30 for the last couple of laps.
Tim broke free from his companion a few hundred feet
from the bottom the final accent of the creg willies
climb. Tim gapped him self quickly leaving graeme to
chase for the last few miles with no sign of anyone
trying to bridge the gap to the front. Tim kept
himself ahead of the race to take the honours.
Graeme finished 2nd after a well ridden race.
Andrew Roche finished off the podium and also
took the vets prize,Tom Black and Aaron Livesey came in close behind.
The main field soon followed with Cal Crutchlow
taking the charge ahead of professional sprinter Rob
Dooley.
Martin Hall won the B Event, Laura
Wasley finished as first lady.

Kelly 10th in Soens |
|
Manx Viking Wheeler rider Joe Kelly battled
through the changing weather to finish 10th in a
strong field, at the Eddie Soens Classic.
The switch from track to road doesn't seem to
have fazed Kelly, as he held his own in the
bunch sprint. Kelly recently competed at the
Track Cycling World Cup event in Beijing with
fellow Manx rider and 100%ME teammate Mark
Christian.
Kelly will be hoping to improve on this result,
as he continues his busy road schedule up until
the summer.
Kelly's team mate Simon Yates started of the day
as one of the favourites and reigning champion.
Yates' team moved to the front, with two laps to
go, but the young rider failed to live up
expectations, finishing 50 seconds behind the
winner.
Experienced rider, Russell Downing, won today's
51st edition of the Eddie Soens, as his Endura
Racing team filled the podium spots. Endura
showed their pedigree splitting the field on the
final lap, giving Downing the perfect
opportunity to claim the honours.
There was another Wheelers rider in the peloton,
with Josh Knights lining up for his first race
in his new colours. Knights recently joined Mountivation
Cycling Development Academy at the beginning of
the season, as a first year junior.
Tom
Black also featured with his new team Cycle
Premier finishing at the tail end of the leading
group.

qualified advanced spin instructor and has a degree
in Sport Science. Tuesdays session covered a bit of
everything and Thursday class was more specific
working on speed and VO2 max. Martin's plan is to
target areas to improve VO2 max, lactate thresholds
and speed work over the next 8 weeks.
Another
important aspect he is working on is improving core
strength an important but often neglected aspect of
cycling.
There are still some places
available for members at both sessions. If you
would like to come along for a work out please
contact Brian on 495684 or brian-johnson@manx.net |

Christian wins
National Madison |
Mark Christian paired with Simon yates won the 2012
National Madison Championship. The Duo riding in the
100% ME kit started the race as they meant to go on
, taking the first two sprint with precision.
Staying on course by the half way point the pair
where leading the race by a sufficient advantage. A
text book finish ended the event with Mark Christian
& Simon Yates taking the honor's ahead of Alex
Dowsett & Tom Murry (SKY Pro Cycling & Sigma Sport
Specialized) and George Atkins & Owain Doulle (100%
ME).
Riders reactions.
Mark
Christian
"It
was a good race and we won a national title so
I'm really happy with that. We knew from the
start it would be a tactical race and with just
a few teams riding it was a hard 200 laps and we
had to work hard to win that. We've been putting
a lot of track work in during the winter with
the academy and it’s obviously paid off today.
It’s a nice way to finish off the track season
because we are in a transition period at the
moment crossing over to road work. I've got a
training camp coming up in Majorca shortly with
the Academy then I'm going to be based in
Belgium with AN Post who I'm riding for. Another
win for the Isle of Man, nice to keep it in the
family."
Simon
Yates
"We've trained for that. Just arrived back from
Bejing so we're going pretty well on the track.
We wanted to get involved with the race early on
and winning the first two sprints took a bit of
pressure off. We could have sat back towards the
end of the race because we had pretty much done
what we had to but we pushed on because we
didn't want anyone to get a lap on us and to be
honest I couldn't really relax till we'd
finished the race."
