Roche
Storms to Microgaming Time Trial Win
|
|
Evergreen Andrew Roche stormed to his
second consecutive victory over the rolling hills around St Marks,
Braaid, Eairy and Ballasalla on a blustery Sunday morning. With the long
cycling season slowly rolling to a close this popular Time Trial
incorporated the Manx 25mile Time Trial Championship and was hosted by
the Manx Viking Wheelers. Roche crossed the line in an unbelievable
1.01.54 to claim the title from Elliot Baxter 1.05.03 who is putting his
final preparations together for this months end 2 end. Third place went
to Cav’s right hand man, Rob Dooley, back on the island during his rest
week! In a creditable 1.07.22
The Junior Title
went to rising star Josh Knights with a fantastic 1.09.57 whilst the
veteran’s award went to Gianni Epifani in a slightly quicker time of
1.09.02.
Another star of the future and taking advantage of our early retiring
island games ladies squad, Anna Christian circulated in 1.25.01 to
become the Ladies National 25mtt Champion and earn herself a new dress
for the annual dinner on November 5th.
The Juvenile victory went to Jamie Dudley in 1.15.05 also boding
well for a successful jump into the junior ranks very shortly.
Microgaming generously sponsored the event
with the awards and refreshments taking place in newly refurbished
Silverdale Café, making it a very successful event all round.

Bikestyle 10 League |
Dear Competitor.
Due to circumstances which have come to light
regarding the running of the lost week’s cycling in the series (Week 7)
I was under the misunderstanding that I could just re-run the event in
retrospect simply because it was part of the series.
Having
spoken to the relevant authorities this is not the case, and the Police
Cycling Authorisation applied for at the beginning of the season has
expired.
This coupled with concerns about running a race during
Manx Grand Prix practice week and looking at the long range weather
forecast have prompted me to go back on my statement made at the C.A.
Meeting of the 1st August.
Week 7, will not now be run this
coming Wednesday, 24th August and looking at the racing calendar I
cannot see an opportunity to run it at any time within the rest of the
season.
Therefore I am upholding the decision made on the 15th
June at the “10” League and I will be re-adjusting the system and that
is to have the final results evaluated from the best 9 rounds from 14 so
that it is fair to every competitor.
I am sorry to you all that
we are unable to complete the series.
Many thanks for your
continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Jim Cottier. |

Commonwealth Youth
Games Please Help!! |
As you know I have been trying to
handle the organisation of the CYG without involving those that
normally spend far too much of their own time dedicated to cycling
becoming embroiled.
However I'm afraid the time has now
come !
Please find attached a summary of
the people recruited to date and roles allocated. (Excel
/ PDF)
I am in urgent need of more experienced
cyclists to
act as marshals (what a surprise!) for Friday
night and Saturday.
There are many people
'missing' from the volunteer list that owe the sport something back
having 'taken' a lot over a long period and I expect them to come
forward !
As such can I task each road Club to
produce a further 8 marshals (24 in total) please ? This is the
minimum requirement to enable to event to take place under the Risk
Assessment. It would be helpful to have more! Mountain Bike and BMX
members will be most welcome, it's just that this is a road event
and as such I feel responsibility should fall to the road based
clubs.
Please ask the 'volunteers' to
complete the VAF form (Word
/ PDF) and
submit to me along with a passport size photo. My address is 4 Birch
Hill Gardens, Onchan, IM3 4ET.
I apologise for communicating in
this tone but as you can tell I'm pretty hacked off with the
response I've had. Feel free to convey my feelings to your Club
membership.
There is an element of urgency
required and I need the names, photos and forms by Friday 24th
August.

EVCC Appleby Sportive |
|
On Sunday 7th August, the Ellan Vannin CC will be promoting the
Appleby Sportives. The event consists of 2 courses - timed over either
100km ride or 72Km, with both starting and finishing at the Ramsey Rugby
Club in the Mooragh Park, Ramsey. Participants may start anytime between
0900 & 1030, although slower riders are advised to go off as close to
0900 as possible.
The courses are challenging, with over 1500m of ascent including
the climbs of Druidale (& Slieau Whallian for the 100Km) and taking in
many roads that are not typically used in local races. The organisers
stress that a Sportive is not a race and that although participants will
be timed over the various sections of the course, the rules of the road
must be obeyed at all times.

Lighthouse Sportive |
|
September 4 2011 sees the debut of the ‘Lighthouses Challenge’ sportive
event supported by Microgaming. Following popular feedback from last
year’s two Isle of Man sportives, the Appleby and Curragh Classic, the
IOMCA’s performance group has decided to resurrect a classic ride from
bygone years taking in the Island’s lighthouses (where possible!) and
taking in most of the Island’s coastline.
The lighthouses challenge offers two course distances, 100 miles and 41
miles, and the opportunity to ride the longer event in a 3 or 4 rider
team. The teams will be allowed to changeover at a point of their choice
as long as it’s at one of the 6 checkpoints.
The course will
take a clockwise route from Douglas with the short course finishing in
Peel. The 100 mile course takes in over 1200 metres of climbing, which
includes the climbs to Cregneash and the
Sloc, before
taking
in the Northern
plains and then the shorter climbs along the North East coast back into
Douglas. The longer event will have 3 feed zones and the short version 1
feed zone. At each feed zone there will be a (limited) supply of energy
food and drink.
The Lighthouses
Challenge, along with the Appleby Sportive in early August, provides the
perfect preparation in the run up to End 2 End Challenge which takes
place on the 18th
September.
All entries will be taken
online,
via
www.iomcycling.com
or follow the link on any of the cycling club websites. All entrants,
individual and team, will receive a t-shirt as well as the energy food
and drink available at feed stations.

Varley takes
handicap
from Livsey |
|
The 6 lap, 36 mile handicap event started off in cold, wet blustery
conditions and consisted of six groups, with the last group setting
off 9 minutes behind the first. Unfortunately the long markers were
caught just after the start of lap two, and by the start of lap
four, group six had caught the field, and were chasing down leaders
Josh Knights & Rob Holden who had clipped off the front by 15
seconds. By lap five the leaders had been reeled in, and had been
joined by the riders from group six, along with some others who had
managed to jump onto the leading bunch as the field split due to the
fast pace . By the time lap six started, the lead bunch was down to
four, Darren Bell, Aaron Livsey, Christian Varley & Jake Kelly,
as James Smettem & Josh Knights had dropped off the leading bunch
slightly. The remaing riders lost further touch, and had been caught
by the chasing pack, and were a further minute or so away.
The final dash to the line was between Varley and Livsey,
with Christian outsprinting his TMT Team mate to win the race in a
time of 1 hour 37 minutes, with a further nine seconds back, Jake
Kelly, who had the beating of Darren Bell in the sprint for
