Message from CA Chairman
Graeme Hatcher |
|
Dear All, it would appear an opportune
moment to remind all riders of the rules regarding
overtaking in time trials, these regulations state
that: -
“Competitors must ride entirely alone and
unassisted and not ride in company or take shelter
(commonly known as drafting) from other riders or
vehicles. A competitor overtaking another must pass
without receiving or giving shelter. The onus of
avoiding company riding shall be upon the rider
overtaken.
Footnote:
Competitors must ride entirely alone and
unassisted and not ride in company or take shelter
(commonly known as drafting) from another rider or
vehicles.
If you should catch up another rider you
should try to pass as quickly as possible and must
not in any other circumstances ride close behind so
that you take shelter from the wind.
You must set your own pace and not use
another rider as a pace maker. The onus on avoiding
company riding shall be on the rider overtaken.
Nor is it in order to ride alongside and
even to ride a few metres behind for any appreciable
distance. In the spirit of the sport, caught riders
should not disturb the performance of the rider
catching them by re-passing and/or riding closely
behind them, except when they can sustain that move.
This is generally considered to mean that the caught
rider should allow a reasonable gap to develop of
some 30 to 50 yards/metres.”

Marie Curie Etape Caledonia |
The happy Wheelers trio of Christine and Peter
O'Shea and Colin Falconer have been on their travels
again. This time a bit closer to home. They rode the
81 mile Marie Curie Etape Caledonia on Sunday in,
thankfully, reasonable weather (not too warm, but
dry, unlike here at home and in the Lakes where
Gianni Epifani was riding the Fred Whitton. The trio
joined over 4,000 other participants in this closed
road event (one of three in the Marie Curie Etape
series). Unlike other sportives this event is less
gruelling with only 1,950 ish metres of climbing
most of that in one climb up Schiellion. The route
started and finished in Pitlochry taking the riders
out to the end of Loch Rannoch, before returning
back along the loch, up over the main climb and back
to Pitlochry. A undulating course. This event is
highly recommended to any level of rider. You might
think that an average of 13 mph is too much for you,
but with the help of other of similar ability, the
speed soon increases. Christine completed the route
in 4:48:52 (2042 overall, 91st women and 10th in her
age group), Peter did 4:19:58 (1010 overall and 127
in his age group) and Colin completed the ride in
4:53:59 (2208 overall and 513 in his age group).
Great day out and you get back in time for lunch.
There two other events in the series, Etape Pennines
and Etape Mercia. Marie Curie cancer care benefit
from the entries as well as some riders raising
money in sponsorship. One rider raised more than
£7,000 for Marie Curie Cancer care.
The next
instalment will be on 7 July where Peter and Colin
will be riding L'Etape du Tour near Annecy. Peter is
also going to ride La Marmotte on 6 July, so fingers
crossed that he can complete both rides. |

Christian wins tour of the Middle |
Christian
Varley, riding in his British Premier Calendar Node4
team colours, won today’s Tour of the Middle Road
Race.
The second round of the Black Grace
Cowley Sponsored road race series saw 50+ riders
take to the start line. The vast difference in
capability, within the group, became apparent with
an early split in the peloton on the first climb
over Stugadoo.
Darren Bell, Tom Black, Chris
Whorral, Andrew Roche and Varley tried to make an
early break on the second lap around the undulating
course but were soon reeled in by the chasing
peloton. As the race progressed more and more were
shelled out of the leading group leaving approx. 8
men with a chance of taking the honors.
Bell
made a second bid to break away from the front group
to be brought back by Varley, after just regaining
contact from suffering a puncture, with a lull in
the group Christian then showed off his form by
attacking on the penultimate climb over the
Stugadoo.
Varley held off the strong chase,
by the remaining lead group, to take the top step,
with Bell and Andrew Roche completing the podium.

Van Vlaanderen |
Three
Wheelers rode the Ronde van Vlaanderen on 30th
March. Peter and Christine O'Shea with Colin
Falconer joined the 16,000 riders. Christine and
Colin rode the 133kms event that took in all but one
of the climbs on the Pave completing the route in
just under 7 hours. Peter rode the long event of
259kms, completing the route in 11hrs and 38 mins.
The weather was much the same as here, although the
temperature did notrise above freezing all day start
@ -4.5'C. There was a significant north easterly
wind. Combined, the wind and temperature made it
tough enough. Add the cobbled sections of climbing,
down hill and flat the event is some experience. You
have to grip your bars in a death grip when on the
cobbles. Great day out, brilliant atmosphere and the
feed stations were pretty good. |

YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! |
|
Isle of Man Youth
Tour 3rd, 4th & 5th May
We have been requested by the organisers of the
Isle of Man Youth Tour, to organise the
marshalling of one of the races. At the recent
committee meeting, it was decided to help with
the Saturday morning race, around the Peel
circuit.
We ask for willing volunteers.
You will get the opportunity to watch the stars
of the future race over the testing "switchback"
course. Previous years have provided top
quality racing from these keen and eager
cyclists. One recent competitor showed his
commitment, style and class, during his time in
the leading group in this years Tour of
Flanders.
During your morning marshalling, you will ensure
the riders get to race in a safe conditions.
You get to give something back to the local
race scene whilst representing your club and the
Island cycling community.
We appreciate that Saturday mornings are
precious and you would expect to be
concentrating on your own cycling. You will
still have your Saturday afternoon, all of
Sunday and the bonus of a bank holiday on the
Monday!
Please confirm to Helen Wolstencroft, your
commitment to help. Email would be preferable.
Many thanks in anticipation of your assistance
with this matter!!!

Island Games
Selection |
The selection
standard for the 2013 Bermuda IIG team has now been
agreed by the Cycling Association Performance Group
(PG). Those members of the PG seeking selection have
not been involved with this process.
The PG
are more than aware of the increasing standard of
competition at the games and the squad selected will
reflect this challenge. That said the PG are
confident that those riders selected to represent
the Island will be capable of challenging for Gold
medals in all three disciplines - Time Trial, Road
Race & Criterium.
The four on Island
consideration events are:
> March 17 Roy
Killey Memorial RR > March 24 Fletcher Trophy TT
> April 7 Tour of the West RR > April 21 Rob
Roher 25 Riders unable to compete in these events
due to team commitments - either National squad or
own contracted teams will still be available for
selection. Performance in these higher standard
events will be considered.
Selection will not
be a points based exercise. TT results will give a
direct comparison, however in RR events the riders
overall performance rather than result will be key.
The PG will beconsidering amongst others:
>
a. Tactical awareness. > b. Team dynamics -
willingness to sacrifice own performance for that of
the team. > c. Riders must be competent to
compete in all three disciplines.
The
previously successful youth policy remains
applicable.
Riders seeking selection do so
understanding that they face a significant financial
commitment - currently in excess of £700. All
riders wishing to be considered for the team must do
so by contacting Gary Hinds at iomcycling@hotmail.co.uk by
the 15 March. Any riders failing to do so will not
be considered. |

The James Berry
Fund has been established in memory of James
Berry. James was a young and promising Isle
of Man cyclist who was tragically killed in
December 2005 while out training with fellow
Manx cyclists.
The fund has
been set up in James’ memory by riders
and friends from Manx cycling clubs and
the Fund is administered through the
Isle of Man Cycling Association. The aim
of the fund is predominantly, though not
necessarily exclusively, to give support
to young Isle of Man riders that wish to
improve their skills and experience by
riding in Europe.
Isle of Man
based riders are invited to apply for
support through the fund for the 2013
season and to assist the fund
administrators, should complete the
associated forms. Theseforms are

Off Island racing for MVW members in 2013 |
|
The club are looking at taking a team (or more if
enough interest) to a number of races in the
UK/Ireland during 2013, which will be subsidised by
the Club. Possible events being considered at this
stage are the Suir Valley 3 day (open to 2nd, 3rd,
4th category seniors, juniors and vets), TLI Crit
and Road Champs (open to all categories), and the
Tour of Wales 5 day (categories to be confirmed). If
you are interested in racing in any or all of these
events then please contact Adam Johnson as soon as
possible on 306697. Once we know numbers we will
look at how best to support these events |
